Dr Sandra Mtandabari
Sandra is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society and a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). She brings more than 25 years of experience in mental health practice, working across the lifespan with children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups.
Her clinical experience spans a wide range of settings, including the National Health Service (NHS), Ministry of Defence (MOD), Police Forces, non-government organisations (NGOs), the voluntary sector, and private practice. She has also worked with charities such as Save the Children and has supported vulnerable children and communities in Africa.
Sandra has a particular interest in trauma and psychological resilience. She was involved in the psychological response supporting individuals affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in London and has contributed to work connected with the Covid Inquiry. In addition, she has volunteered with Victim Support and offers expert witness services.
Her professional interests include the psychological and spiritual effects of migration, displacement, and diaspora identity. She facilitates Stranger in a Strange Land workshops, exploring the impact of migration on psyche, identity, belonging, and spiritual wellbeing.
Sandra works from a holistic and integrative perspective, recognising the interconnected psychological, physical, social, and spiritual dimensions of human experience. She collaborates with Christian organisations to promote reflective, trauma-informed, and spiritually sensitive approaches to wellbeing and pastoral care.
Her doctoral research focused on demystifying spiritual abuse by translating complex and often hidden experiences into language that enables recognition, understanding, safeguarding, and transformation. The research explores how power and authority can become distorted within sacred spaces and highlights the importance of spiritual trauma-informed practice, ethical leadership, and theological reflection that upholds human dignity.
Her therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), schema therapy, existential psychotherapy, systemic principles, and motivational interviewing. She is committed to creating a compassionate and reflective therapeutic space in which all dimensions of a person’s lived experience can be thoughtfully addressed.
